TikTok sets 60-minute screen time for minors

TikTok announced its 60-minute screen-time limit for users under 18 years old on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Effective in the coming weeks, users will be prompted to enter a passcode to continue watching TikTok videos.

“While there’s no collectively endorsed position on the ‘right’ amount of screen time or even the impact of screen time more broadly, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s head of trust and safety, wrote in a blog post.

Keenan added that this feature requires users to make an active decision to extend time, citing research that said that being aware of how spending time can help users to be more intentional about the decisions they make.

This feature also works with TikTok’s “Family Pairing” capability, which gives a guardian the option to turn the new setting on.
